Wine 10 from system running games better than proton-ge-lastest or wine-ge-latest from Heroic.

Main Post:

guys, after I have updated my debian from 12 to 13, the wine from system is running much better games (like songs of conquest and disco elysium) than proton-ge or wine-ge from heroic games. A simple "$ wine game.exe", without extra configuration do the job better than heroic. Any thoughts why?

extra info of my pc:

8gb ram
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz
Cape Verde PRO [Radeon HD 7750/8740 / R7 250E]

Top Comment: what version of wine is heroic configured to use for that game?

Suddenly can't launch any games with GE Proton.

Main Post:

Hi, I'd like to use GE proton for a few games like Warframe and Final Fantasy XIV, and I have used it in the past to play warframe. But recently, launching games with GE Proton (I've tried several version of it now) just causes an eternal "Preparing to launch [game]... " screen. The game never actually launches. I've completely nuked my .steam folder and uninstalled/reinstalled Steam, but the problem still continues. Running the games with PROTON_LOG=1 produces no log, so I think Proton is failing to start.

OS: Pop_os 20.02

Kernel: 5.8.1

GPU: Radeon 5700XT

Cpu: Ryzen 3700X

Is it some weird permissions mishap or is there some dependency I might be missing?

EDIT: I solved it by unsubscribing from the oibaf Mesa PPA (sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers). I guess it was causing some incompatibilities between libraries.

Top Comment:

What probably happened is that PPA might have more recent libs/drivers that were incompatible. Since it was more recent, your system could be preferring it over a GE-compatible lib

It's a wild guess

GE-Proton 10-14 brings lots of fixes for Windows games on Linux / SteamOS

Main Post: GE-Proton 10-14 brings lots of fixes for Windows games on Linux / SteamOS

Top Comment: Recently decided to drive Linux to see how are things and, welp, now I'm fully switched (started with Bazzite, tested Cachy, settled on Kubuntu). Few quirks with protons versions at the start but I'm finding it hard to get back to Windows Maybe placebo, maybe not, but I'm feeling everything smoother gaming wise, the ever so present micro stutter on the lows are basically gone, blew my socks off. My ever so loved Listary needs got nicely replaced by KRunner, Lutris and Heroic Launcher are a breeze, emulators are performing better (especially the Switch and PS4 one) and oh dear, I missed being able to customize the appearance of the OS and make it as ugly as I want lol

So what is Proton GE and how do I get it?

Main Post:

Topic. There's a game I'd like to play but what I've read is that without Proton GE it won't work right.

Proton is the OS that the deck runs on right? So is GE something baked into the deck that I can run games with, or is it an external download? If the latter, what's a safe way to get it and install it, and will putting it on my deck interfere with other games?

Sorry if these are all really dumb questions, as much as my deck is helping me learn about PC gaming quirks, all the different proton versions and things are just confusing to me still.

Top Comment: Proton is the compatability layer that SteamOS uses to run Windows games on the deck. Proton GE is a custom version developed by 'glorious eggroll' (hence GE). Easiest way I've found to run it is do install the 'ProtonUp-QT' from the Discover Store on your steam deck. Run it after installing it and it will allow you to choose which version of GE to install. If you're not sure which version, just get the latest one. Once it's installed, you can then select it as a compatability option for the game in Steam. (Gear icon on game page > Compatability > Check the box to change it to GE)
